Learning outcomes

After completing this module successfully you will be familiar with the fundamental design and technical parameters of static and dynamic typography in different media contexts. You will have an overview of the historical development of using type and sign systems, be able to make an appropriate stylistic and functional use of typography to produce layouts and able to explain your design decisions. You will be technically able to execute design tasks and will know the basic principles of the appropriate hard- and software well enough to be able to react to future developments.

Module content

Introduction to the fundamental terms of micro- and macro-typography such as typefaces, type sizes, type design, letter and word spacing, type layout, line length, and line spacing, distribution of text, placing illustrations, measuring systems, etc., the historical development of typefaces and of changing printing processes. Introduction to the basic functions and use of current software for layout, illustration, and image processing, and to the technical aspects of displays and software for printing and scanning.
