Learning outcomes

After completing this module successfully you will be capable of analyzing complex theories of communication and media independently and of presenting the results professionally. You will be capable of reflecting on the interdependence of design and media innovations and of generating concepts for design and planning iteratively from of results. Within your individual specialization you will be capable to discussing and evaluating the ecological, legal, ergonomic, cognitive, and semiotic aspects of designed artefacts and their exhibition characteristics.

Module content

New approaches in the communication and media sciences such as post-structuralism, deconstructionism, and system theory. Current theories on the end of the book culture and the rise of the digital age. History of aesthetics from the Enlightenment to the Postmodern. Sustainability balances and ecological footprints. Contract, immaterial property, and patent laws. Complexity and man-machine interaction. Safety issues in the user-oriented design of guidance systems. Multiple theories of natural and artificial intelligence. Paradigm change in the cognitive sciences: connectionism. Theories of selected research areas in semiotics: signal, information, and sign. Sign-based systems and processes. Complex approaches to the theory and practice of planning, execution, and evaluation of exhibitions.
