International relations - studies and working experience abroad
Studying abroad during the course opens new perspectives; students experience different study topics and ways of teaching and learning, and are exposed to the new sights, sounds, languages, tastes, smells, working methods, and values of another culture. By learning to live with these differences successfully they achieve a deeper understanding of themselves, their values, and their own culture. Many students make lasting friends and find their way to a new future through their stay in another country. The percentage of our students taking the opportunity to go abroad during their studies is high and the University enjoys the rank of eighth in Germany.
The University maintains both student and teacher exchange programmes with its many partner institutions. The SOCRATES/ERASMUS programmes enable selected students to spend a study semester abroad in Europe or to participate in several seminar or workshop activities The University has a growing number of partners in several other countries. By contractual agreement the course units successfully completed at the partner institution are credited towards the student's graduation at the University.
An increasing number of students are choosing to spend their industrial practice semester abroad, often in conjunction with a subsequent study semester. Although students are responsible for finding their own placement positions the University supports their efforts and can help to direct them to organizations offering assistance.
The University has close ties with scholarship-awarding organizations such as Carl-Duisberg-Gesellschaft, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Fulbright Commission. The University supports and assists students who are appling for scholarships for placements or study.
A significant number of our students have been successful in gaining scholarships to continue their study abroad after graduation and many have gained further internationally recognized academic qualifications. Many work abroad later or, benefitting from their foreign experience and qualifications, gain positions in German companies active in international design activities.
