“Here"s where you learn to crack really tough problems.” Ron Jagodzinski, MA Student
Examinations: evaluation and grading
The purpose of examinations is to determine whether the student has achieved the necessary knowledge and methods, has developed a systematic orientation, and is thus capable of continuing his studies successfully. Evaluation takes place on the basis of exercises, the presentation of project results, a written or oral test, or the submission of a term paper. The results are expressed as a grade and ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits are awarded.
At the end of the 3rd semester, with the completion of the basic studies the individual unit grades are combined into subject grades and a preliminary diploma certificate. At the end of the 7th semester a degree is awarded. The MA course is usually completed in 3 semesters. Details can be found in the University's Study and Examination Regulations.
Degrees
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The Communication Design and Product Design courses are usually completed in 7 semesters after a successful Bachelor examination with the award of the degree "Bachelor of Arts".
The award of the Bachelor of Arts degree certifies that the graduates have gained a comprehensive overview of the field and that their knowledge and skills are sufficient for successful entry into the world of professional design practice and for application to MA courses.
For the BA thesis the student must work independently and systematically through a comprehensive topic from his own area in a maximum of four months. To complete such a design project successfully structuring, research, and the evaluation and utilization of appropriate information must be carried out effectively.
Master of Arts (MA)
The MA thesis in the third semester of the course can either combine a highly complex design project with a comprehensive documentation and a related theoretical commentary or be a dedicated scientific study in its own right. Five months are allowed for this project. After successful completion of the MA degree graduates may apply for doctoral level courses.
