Learning outcomes

After completing this module successfully you will have a wide knowledge of different design approaches and will be able to systematically reflect on and discuss them in relation to the historical, social, cultural, and technological context. You will be capable of drawing and analyzing inferences and distinctions between design, the science, the arts, and the economy. You will be familiar with the current debates on design and culture, able to discuss these critically against the background of contemporary developments, and to incorporate the experience systematically into innovative solutions.

Module content

Design philosophies from individual pieces to the 'End of Design?' Interdependence of the discussions between design and science. The 'New confusion' [neue Unübersichtlichkeit]. Research and design in mode 2 of the creation of knowledge. Elements of a socio-historically oriented history of the culture of design. Design as 'the third culture'? Complex theoretical models of man-machine interactions. From functionalism to the beautification of everyday life. Setting borders and crossing them. Design from the point of view of systems theory and actor-network theory. Design as a praxis-related reality construct.
