Learning outcomes

After completing this module successfully you will be able to understand a written briefing appropriately and to compile one independently. You will have an extended repertoire of skills enabling them to prepare complex content creatively and to put the results into effective text. You will be able to analyze the role of design in the overall context of a company, evaluating company aims, strategies, and operations. You will be able to achieve design solutions in line with design management principles. You will be able to recognize relationships between social and technological developments and to analyze design innovations from these perspectives.

Module content

The origins of language, writing, and the media. The power and limits of pictures. Design treatment of text and styles. The role of design in business success. Types of company and principles of company organization. The financial planning of design processes. The significance of invention in a business context. Aspects of the social structure of user groups with specific reference to the user wishes and interpretative perspectives. Theories and concepts of the origins, design, and control of socio-technical systems looking at phases of origin and cycles of change. The sociology of technology between technology and social determinism.
