The "International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media" – known as Cumulus is an international association of design, art and media schools and universities with a worldwide membership of nearly 200 institutions in tertiary education from 45 countries and representing about 250,000 students. The Association is officially recognized by the Directorship of the EU and UNESCO. Cumulus is a dynamic and creative academic forum concerned with the questions of education, design theory and research and their development and promotion. It is particularly concerned with the questions of sustainability, innovation and standards of quality. Since 2004 the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd has been a member of Cumulus.

The Executive Board of Cumulus has 10 members each from a different country and from 2007 our Rector, Cristina Salerno was a Board member, followed by Prof. Peter Stebbing (2010 – 2013) and, since 2013, by Prof. Ulrich Schendzielorz.

The biannual Conferences offer a unique platform for an international dialogue between colleagues and experts about developments in design education and all its many facettes. In 2007 the HfG hosted the spring conference with the theme "Crossing Boundaries – transfer into design, within design and from design“. The presentation of papers by guest lecturers and key note lectures by reknown experts provoked a stimulating exchange of ideas and a powerful impulse for the design curriculum.
